23andMe, once a high-flying biotech company, now faces financial decline as customers increasingly make single purchases and disengage. With its valuation down 99% from a $6 billion peak in 2021, 23andMe’s shares are now worth mere pennies. As the company struggles for survival, a pressing question remains for its 15 million users: what will 23andMe do with the vast trove of genetic data it has collected?
While 80% of customers have opted in to allow medical research on their data, privacy concerns linger. Genetic information with 23andMe lacks strong federal protections, as laws like HIPAA don’t apply to non-healthcare companies. Some states, including California, do offer consumers the right to withdraw their data, though anonymization may make it challenging to fully remove samples from research databases. Moreover, 23andMe maintains an agreement with GlaxoSmithKline to share anonymized data for pharmaceutical research, adding to user concerns over data handling.
The company’s stance on law enforcement access also draws attention. Although 23andMe has resisted providing genetic data in response to subpoenas, recent cases involving genealogy databases to solve crimes raise concerns over how well customers’ genetic privacy can truly be safeguarded. In addition to privacy issues, 23andMe has weathered internal turmoil, including a recent board resignation following CEO Anne Wojcicki’s attempt to take the company private after a major data breach last year impacted 6.9 million accounts.
Analysts predict 23andMe may not survive another year without restructuring, leaving customers uneasy about the future of their genetic data. While Wojcicki has pledged to keep privacy protections in place, many users remain uncertain and concerned about how their information could be used as the company’s financial woes continue.

Apple is moving away from its annual product release cycle toward a more fluid approach, allowing for more frequent but staggered product launches. Historically, Apple has unveiled major devices like iPhones, iPads, and Macs in September and October, aligning its updates with key sales seasons and creating a predictable cadence that streamlined marketing and motivated employees. However, as Apple’s product lineup expands, with new devices like the Apple Watch Ultra and iPhone SE, a one-size-fits-all annual upgrade cycle has proven impractical. This shift acknowledges the challenges of balancing innovation across Apple’s broad product ecosystem, including its wide array of software platforms.
The company has already shown flexibility by introducing new products like iPads and Macs outside the typical fall launch window and addressing growing strains on resources and timelines. This year, Apple staggered the rollout of its new Apple Intelligence features, emphasizing a phased approach that Tim Cook acknowledged as necessary. Unlike previous years, where Apple might have downplayed missing features, this strategy allows the company to deliver updates when ready rather than pushing incomplete products to market, easing pressure on Apple’s engineering teams.
Certain devices, such as the Apple Watch Ultra and Watch SE, are shifting to a multi-year refresh cycle, reflecting Apple’s recognition that not all products require annual upgrades. By consolidating more impactful features over two years for some models, Apple can better meet consumer expectations without overextending its resources. This adjustment also allows for continued innovation while reducing the chances of delays and feature shortfalls, as seen with some recent software updates.
Looking forward, Apple’s evolving release strategy offers a new rhythm that may increase flexibility for innovation. While this move may alter expectations among investors and consumers accustomed to Apple’s fall launch cycle, it aligns with Apple’s commitment to delivering polished, complete products that aim to “surprise and delight.”
The power of news influencers of TikTok

TikTok has become a powerful player in the news ecosystem, transforming how information is shared and consumed by millions of people, especially younger audiences. Unlike traditional news media, TikTok’s short, engaging format and viral potential make it an ideal platform for “news influencers”—content creators who report, explain, and contextualize current events in a unique, relatable style. These influencers can make information more accessible and, often, more entertaining, turning news stories into content that resonates on a personal level.
Influencers like Victoria Hammett (@victoriahammett) and Damon Dominique (@damondominique) have gained followers in the millions by tackling everything from climate issues to international politics. They break down complex topics into digestible snippets, often using humor, pop-culture references, and even skits. As tech analyst Alex Banks says, “TikTok’s news influencers are creating a hybrid between traditional journalism and personal branding. This style resonates with audiences who view authenticity as just as important as objectivity.”
A Pew Research study found that about one-third of TikTok users in the U.S. now turn to the platform for news, with younger audiences increasingly gravitating toward influencers rather than major media outlets . This shift has allowed for more diverse perspectives and decentralized news sources. However, it also raises concerns over misinformation, as influencers are often perceived as experts despite a lack of journalistic training. As social media researcher Sarah Watson highlights, “TikTok news influencers are navigating a complex space, balancing between educating their followers and maintaining credibility in a crowded and fast-paced media landscape.”
The trend is also attracting attention from brands and organizations, which recognize the immense reach and influence these creators hold. Partnerships between influencers and news organizations are emerging, with the goal of combining the authenticity of influencer content with the credibility of established media. For example, The Washington Post has collaborated with TikTok influencers to increase its reach among younger audiences. With news consumption habits shifting, this new model may soon become the norm.

As more young people seek tangible skills, job security, and entrepreneurial freedom, trades are experiencing a resurgence—and Gen Z is leading the way. Often described as the “Tool Belt Generation,” they are embracing the opportunity to gain hands-on skills and experience in sectors that are both in-demand and rewarding.
Why Gen Z is Turning to the Trades
The appeal of a hands-on trade is multifaceted. For one, Gen Z witnessed Millennials struggle with student loan debt and a saturated job market, leading them to question the viability of a traditional college path. According to a survey by the ECMC Group, only 48% of Gen Z believe a four-year degree is necessary for success, with many considering alternative routes like vocational programs and apprenticeships.
“I chose welding because I wanted a job where I could create something tangible and have job security,” says Liam Spencer, a 22-year-old welding apprentice. “Going to a four-year college didn’t feel like the right choice for me, and I knew I’d be learning skills I could use immediately.” This sentiment is shared by many in Gen Z, who value the immediate payoff and freedom that come with vocational work. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that many trades are experiencing steady demand, with sectors like plumbing and electrical work projected to grow by 10% through 2031, making these skills attractive long-term investments.
Economic Freedom and Job Security
Gen Z is highly motivated by financial stability and is turning to trades as a pathway to financial freedom. Trade school programs are generally shorter and less expensive than four-year degrees, with many programs costing between $5,000 and $15,000 compared to the tens of thousands for a traditional college education. Additionally, trades often offer lucrative earning potential. In 2023, for example, the median annual wage for electricians was approximately $60,000, with experienced tradespeople able to earn much more.
The rise of apprenticeships also provides Gen Z with paid on-the-job training, allowing them to learn and earn simultaneously. “You’re not just a student; you’re a worker from day one,” says Sarah Collins, a 20-year-old plumbing apprentice. “In trade school, I knew I was acquiring skills I could apply right away, and I didn’t have to go into debt to do it.” This combination of affordability and immediate employability is highly appealing to Gen Z, who seek to avoid debt while securing sustainable, well-paying jobs.
Entrepreneurship and Independence
Gen Z is known for its entrepreneurial spirit, and the trades offer a compelling route to business ownership. With the skills they acquire through apprenticeships or trade school, many Gen Z workers feel empowered to start their own businesses after gaining experience. “After a few years as an apprentice, I’m hoping to start my own business and eventually hire my own apprentices,” says Marco Garcia, a 24-year-old carpenter. “The trades let you make a name for yourself, and there’s something very fulfilling about building something with your own two hands.”
This independent approach is not just a lifestyle choice but a response to modern job market dynamics. Gen Z has seen rapid shifts in the economy and workplace instability, and self-employment offers a sense of control over their careers. The ability to take on projects, work independently, and set their own schedules aligns well with Gen Z’s value of flexibility and autonomy.
Skills for a Sustainable Future
Another factor driving Gen Z’s interest in trades is their commitment to sustainability and practical, tangible solutions to modern challenges. Many young people are interested in “green trades” like solar panel installation, energy-efficient building, and sustainable agriculture. A study by Deloitte found that 77% of Gen Z respondents believe it is essential for businesses to address climate change, and this commitment extends to their choice of career. By pursuing skills in sustainable trades, they can work on solutions to environmental issues while building secure, lasting careers.
The integration of modern technology into the trades, such as smart home installations, sustainable construction techniques, and electric vehicle maintenance, also appeals to Gen Z’s tech-savvy side. This generation is adapting traditional trades to include innovative, environmentally friendly practices that align with their values and goals for the future.
Redefining Success Through Skilled Trades
Gen Z’s embrace of the trades is reshaping perceptions around what it means to have a successful career. For this “Tool Belt Generation,” trades offer financial independence, job security, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. As more young people forgo the traditional college route, they are revitalizing industries in need of skilled workers and proving that a hands-on career can be as fulfilling and prestigious as any other path.
Ultimately, Gen Z’s return to the trades shows a generational shift toward practical, values-driven careers that prioritize sustainability, entrepreneurship, and stability. They are breaking down old stereotypes and building a future where skilled labor is celebrated, respected, and at the forefront of innovation.
